Eﬀective segmentation of such biological images helps life-science researchers obtain useful imaging information for downstream analysis including disease diagnosis, treatment, and new drug discovery. The thresholding obtained from the minimization of the variograms is considered optimal in a spatial context, which can be combined with other optimal criteria for generalization or can be used for hysteresis thresholding as a hard-core threshold  by taking into account the information at various spatial distances.
